Integrating Inexpensive Digital Microscopy into Biology Inquiry Learning

Presenter:  Dr. Brain R. Shmaefsky, Professor of Biology and Service Learning Coordinator, Lone Star College, Kingwood, TX

Description: Digital microscopy and a computer allowing students to view specimens with the ability to manipulate and quantitate the microscopic images. It is an exciting application of microscopy principles for a variety of samples including live mounts, household dust, soil samples and prepared slides. Inquiry-based instruction can be achieved using simple to complex instructional activities using forensic microscopy principles. This interactive presentation will demonstrate field-tested classroom case-studies, lecture demonstrations and laboratory activities that reinforce student content knowledge of scientific method, general biology principles and environmental science.
